Flying over Torrey Pines Beach - I am soaring 387 feet above the Pacific Ocean over Torrey Pines Beach between LaJolla and Delmar. You can look down below and see the shimmering shapes of the waves in the water. Seagulls appear as tiny white specks far below as they scan the surface for fish.

 

As I reverse direction, I see the subtle contours of the ocean bottom through the surface of the water. The colors shift from the dark blue of the deeper water to shades of blue-green as I fly nearer and nearer to the shore.

 

Finally, I see the waves start to form along the shoreline as the power of the gravity of the moon pulls the water inexorably to the shore where it breaks with hypnotic regularity as the waves caress the beach over and over again.

 

This never-ending recurring ritual of nature is somehow comforting in its simplicity, power, and majesty. It is an undeniable fact, in a world awash in relativism and uncertainty. Its rhythm is reassuring, calming, and serene. It is a perfect pattern that we can all trust and believe; a pattern put in motion many millennia ago by the God of order and love.

 

It is interesting to note that the black specks peppering the beach are actually chunks of coal originally discovered in the mid-1800s. According to legend, a Welshman named William Bloodworth discovered a coal vein about 100 feet offshore, which he attempted unsuccessfully to mine. I turn my attention north and slowly fly along the shore watching the interesting wave patterns as I go.

 

Soon I encounter a freestanding sandstone structure called Flat Rock. Beyond Flat Rock to the north, you can see the stairs on the right that come down from the cliffs high above the beach.

 

I retreat back to where I started my flight. I hope you enjoyed spending some time flying over this beach..
