Sunset feels like a sacred time when the earth transitions from the anxiety, stress, and craziness of each day to the serenity and renewal of the night; from light to dark, from active to passive. While I usually seek to capture some form of water to celebrate the golden hour preceding sunset, this time I found myself in the middle of the Desert Southwest in Scottsdale, Arizona at Pinnacle Peak, a granite summit in the area. This interesting little peak stands at an elevation of 3,169 feet above sea level or over 600 feet above the surrounding Scottsdale/Phoenix desert floor.

 

It is located within the 150-acre Pinnacle Peak Park, part of the Sonoran Desert. Hikers follow a four-mile moderately challenging out-and-back trail to hike to the top, although rock climbing skills are needed to reach the summit

 

This is one of the most popular hikes in the area because of the expansive, spectacular views and easy accessibility. The rocky topography and lush upper Sonoran Desert is home to many desert creatures like bobcats, coyotes, javelinas, mountain lions, deer, gila monsters, desert tortoises, quail, lizards, jack rabbits, cactus wrens, ground squirrels, road runners, and of course diamondback rattlesnakes.

 

Coming back to earth right after my trip around the peak made for a perfect capture of the setting sun through the silhouettes of saguaro cactus as a truck drove into the light. I could not resist catching a different perspective of the saguaro cactus from directly above it in the twilight of the blue hour after sunset. There is always something magical to find when objects and light play so well together when the sun is going to bed.
