We recently spent a lazy afternoon together in the Phoenix area. We decided to head east to explore Canyon Lake and the Superstition Mountain area about an hour east of town. The weather was perfect and I decided to fly out over the lake to see what I could see. Canyon Lake is a nine hundred and fifty-acre lake with a maximum depth of about 130 feet. The lake lies about 15 miles up the Apache Trail from Apache Junction and is within the Superstition Wilderness of the Tonto National Forest. The lake is surrounded by rugged sandstone formations that stand in stark contrast to the brilliant blue of its waters. The light was perfect just a bit before sunset and I loved how the golden light glowed on the rock face of these impressive cliffs. This flight over the lake began in the southwest corner of the lake and proceeded straight across the lake to the north and up into the Salt River canyon where it flows into the lake. Upstream, you find Apache Lake and the massive 21,493 acre Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The lake was formed when the Mormon Flat Dam was completed in 1925 after two years of construction at a location where Latter-day Saint settlers from Utah stopped to camp during their migration. This dam is 380 feet wide and 224 feet deep. This was an incredibly beautiful and relaxing time at this calming location.

 

After exploring the lake, we headed down the canyon to catch the last light of dusk bathing the western face of Superstition Mountain. This rugged mountain dominates the skyline on the eastern edge of the Apache Junction area. These mountains include the Lost Dutchmans Gold Mine as well as at least 15 other gold mines. Viewing this mountain fade into the night was a nice way to finish off our day.
