Late Saturday afternoon we decided to take a ride up American Fork Canyon to see if the autumn leaves had faded yet. Surprisingly, they were as bright and beautiful as ever. There is a promontory near the top of the Alpine Loop the overlooks the forest below and the back of Timpanogos above. This time of year it is dappled with thousands of bright yellow quaking aspen trees scattered among the evergreens. When we arrived at this spot we could barely get a spot to park along the side of the road. If you have been up there you know the spot I am talking about. The entire scene was covered in clouds, which made it feel moody and majestic. We expected to see some snow and you can see the powdered sugar scattered all over the peaks in the background.

 

Occasionally, we saw the sun peak out through the western clouds to bathe small sections of yellow and turn them fluorescent in the glow of the setting sun. There was a tiny patch of clouds hanging over the brow of the hill. I decided to fly over to get a close-up view of it, and as I got closer, it began to dissipate. This entire area is filled with color and it was impossible to get a bad shot amid the symphony of color, light, and texture playing so well together that afternoon.

 

Finally, I flew up to about 300 feet and parked the drone in mid-air to capture a time-lapse of the clouds pouring over the mountain tops. This section of the video is comprised of 600 individual shots, taken two-seconds apart, merged together into a single video sequence of just 20 seconds. I just love how these moody mountains looked that cold and breezy afternoon.
