On a trip to Rome we took the obligitory tour of the city and found this gem of history. It was built around 100 A.D. and it is absolutely amazing to see that it is still standing after all these centuries. It is a freestanding concrete dome. The Pantheon is a former Roman temple. Now it is a Catholic church, on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus. It was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian. As you look at the front portico of the building all you see are several large Corinthian columns. A rectangular vestibule links the portico to the rotunda, which is under a coffered concrete dome, with a central opening to the sky called the oculus. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 142 feet. It is incredible that this could have been constructed over two thousand years ago!
