The Colored Pebbles of Lake McDonald are one of its most beautiful features. The beautifully colored rocks and pebbles under the surface of the water and along the lake shores make a tempting target for rock collectors. But since it's in a national park it's best to leave them right where you find them. These rocks are maroon, dark red, green, blue, and other colors. Green indicates that the rock has less iron. The red indicates that the rock was formed in shallow water. The rocks of Lake McDonald are colored because of the amount of iron and other minerals in them. When they were formed in the eons of the past, they were broken down into small rocks and washed into the lake. The green rocks were formed in deep water and so have less iron. The bright red rocks were deposited in a shallow ocean where the iron was oxidized by the air by the tidal exposure.
