We arrived there just before 6 a.m. and were rewarded with this amazing light show reflecting from the surface of the lake. Lake Louise (named Ho-run-num-nay (Lake of the Little Fishes) by the Stoney Nakota First Nations people) is a glacial lake within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is located 3.1 miles west of the village of Lake Louise and the Trans-Canada Highway about 50 miles north of Banff. Lake Louise is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848 - 1939). She was the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and the wife of the Marquess of Lorne, who was the Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. The turquoise color of the water comes from rock flour carried into the lake from the glaciers that overlook the lake. The lake has a surface of .31 sq miles and is drained through the Louise Creek into the Bow River below. Fairmont's Chateau Lake Louise, one of Canada's grand railway hotels, is located on Lake Louise's eastern shore. It is a beautiful luxury resort hotel built in the early 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway. (This panorama is available up to 96" wide). Photo © copyright by Skip Weeks
