A couple of days ago we decided to hike up to Cecret Lake south-east of Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon. We rose at 4:00am to start our hike at 5 and when we got to the top of Alta we found that the last two miles of road were closed so we decided to drop down the canyon a mile or so and hike up to Gloria Falls before dawn.

 

This is one of my favorite hikes and this morning was no exception. Gloria Falls is on the White Pine trailhead that takes you up to Red Pine Lake, White Pine Lake, Maybird Lakes and Pfeifferhorn Peak. It’s almost exactly one mile below Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

 

It’s an easy 2.8 mile round-trip hike with only a 575 foot elevation gain. Even though we started hiking at about 5:15 in the morning it was still light enough that we didn’t need our headlights. I was surprised that we saw almost no snow along our way to the falls. The trail was really dry for this early in the season.

 

On the way back down the trail after the sun had come up we saw an entire grove of quaking aspen trees that had been smashed down and bent over by what must have been an avalanche.

 

The falls are spectacular and are running high with the snow melting fast from the mountains above. The river that feeds the falls descends from White Pine Lake.

 

Many hikers heading up to Red Pine Lake or White Pine Lake miss out on Gloria Falls simply because they are unaware that the falls are just a short distance from those trails.

 

This is a really beautiful area and well worth your time to include it in your summer itinerary of Utah hikes. When you arrive at the base of the falls in the pre-dawn hours be prepared for the temperature to drop ten or fifteen degrees. I admit that I got pretty cold on this morning but it was a very nice alternative to the 100 degree temps that we found down in the valley after we got home. Maybe we’ll be able to hike to Cecret Lake next time.
