I recently watched a fascinating film on NETFLIX called FANTASTIC FUNGI and although I started out this adventure to explore the autumn leaves, I ended it immersed in a huge assortment of mushrooms growing in the forest. When I began my hike I expected to fly out over the brilliantly colored leaves between Sundance and the top of the Alpine Loop above Provo Canyon. I had found some beautiful patches of color there last year and thought that I would find more this year.

 

At the top of Horse Flat Trail I flew over the brow of the eastern hills and saw some color, but what turned out to be even more impressive was the huge hillside to the west covered in yellow and gold, bathed in the light of the early morning sun. I was amazed at the richness of the colors on this hill and as I flew around the north end of the hill, I could see big patches of red and orange in the distance as well as the back side of Timpanogos. It was a perfect still morning and from my vantage point I was grateful to have a birds-eye perspective of this beautiful terrain.

 

As I landed and started to head back down the mountainside I started noticing several large mushrooms emerging from the forest floor. When I saw the first one I thought that would be it, but as I continued to focus my perspective under the canopy of the trees I began to see them everywhere I looked. I was glad that I had work knee-pads because I got down on my hands and knees to view these delicate creations up close and even from below. What an amazing world we live in, whether we are looking down from hundreds of feet above or underneath the crown of a mushroom.
