Yesterday my buddy and I hiked up to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. I had hiked this trail several times before, but I had never hiked up beyond the waterfall that falls through the ceiling of the cave. We decided to venture up beyond that point and found a beautiful little stream cascading down toward the top of the waterfall.

 

It started to get a little steeper than we wanted to risk after that so we carefully turned around and made our way down to the mouth of the cave. The water was coming down pretty fast, which caused the level of the water to be much higher than when I have been there before.

 

Usually I can crawl inside and stay relatively dry, but this time the entire floor of the cave was covered in at least six inches of water all the way to the back of the cave.

 

It’s pretty dark inside of the cave except for the light that pours through the ceiling along with thousands of gallons of water and the little light that enters the low opening you have to crawl through to get inside.

 

The brightly lit waterfall is a stunning contrast to the darkness of the cave. I have always wondered what it looks like from the top of the hole in the ceiling of the cave, and I was able to get a perfect view from my drone from above. It was a bit scary trying to maneuver the drone without getting sucked into the hole by the power of the falls dropping through the narrow opening. I’m not sure that I would even be able to retrieve it inside the cave if it had been pulled inside.

 

From the top of the waterfall I decided to zoom up to almost 400 feet to survey the canyon from above. It gives a pretty amazing perspective from way up there.
