While heading back to the car after shooting Maroon Bells near Aspen Colorado with my son Trevor, we noticed this snowy stand of quakies. According to researchers, the largest living organism in the world is likely Pando in Utah, but Colorado also has many Aspen groves like this one near Aspen. Research shows aspen trees, or aspen clones, are connected to each other underground and aboveground, creating a huge biomass. Most aspen trees are clones of one another. They reproduce through suckers, which are the roots, and they will expand out. When those roots feel the sunlight, they will send up new chutes, new trees.
